WEBMar 21, 2009 · AFAIK the Wells Index is the only mill made in the US. Reports on the web seem good. I have used Sharp, Lagun and Acer and all were good. Sharp has (or had) a large version big table, so tall it almost has to have a power draw bar and was the largest turret mill I have run. WEBJan 18, 2015 · Wells Index 847 stuck back gear handle. Gentleman, My wells model 847 will not shift out of low range. The 847 has a lever with 3 positions, lo, neutral, and hi. A quick background on the mill. I bought it last spring, and before the sellers unhooked it, I ran the machine, and definitely remember checking all features, including hi and lo ranges.

I have installed several 3axis (quill) DRO's on Bridgeports their clones but the Wells pose some challenges, especially on the quill and/or knee.

WEBMay 28, 2022 · Index uses larger dials than the BPs and clones. There is an adaptor between the dial and the machine that I believe Wells made. I don't think anyone made a feed like the Servos and copies specifically for Wells Index. I have the instructions for putting one on the cross feed from Wells and the Servo parts aparantly don't fit.

WEBMay 17, 2012 · The step, isnt really a big deal. Pick up a piece of 1/8 or 3/16 plate and use that at the step. Usually the step is only 1 inch give or take a bit. The use of heavy pinch bars would be your friend here. I would get the back of the mill facing the shop, with the mills base at the edge of the step.

Used from the factory can run 6000 to 8000 plus extras. They rebuild for about 6000.

WEB, 09:41 PM. Index and later WellsIndex machines are high quality mills. The model 555 is a very rigid machine, much more so that a typical BP. Its designed much more like the Gorton millers. No personal experience with one so I can't give you any pointers.
